Startups in Autonomous Retail in Ukraine: Successes and Failures

Over the past five years, autonomous retail has become a business trend and an experimental space in Ukraine. In this article, we analyze which local startups have managed to reach the top and which ones faced unexpected challenges. This will help you understand how to build your own automated business and avoid common mistakes. Let’s explore successful cases together.

Successful Startups

1. BoodFood

Operating since 2020, with franchising launching in 2023. The BoodFood micro-market network is built on innovative Neuroshop technology. The franchise includes over 16 machines located in business centers, shopping malls, and residential complexes. Formats include:

  1. Simple — smart refrigerator with ready-made meals.
  2. Double — refrigerator and coffee machine.
  3. Expanded module for cafes.

2. “Mama, Well, Buy!”

The first surprise-box automatic was launched in May 2021 in Irpin. An investment of $40,000 covered the development of four machines, design, and team salaries.

Selling trendy toys in boxes at playgrounds, shopping malls, and amusement parks generated significant buzz. Today, the company’s network includes nearly 100 machines across Ukraine and five European countries. “Mama, Well, Buy!” is listed in Forbes Next250.

In February 2025, founder Viktor Onoshko announced a collaboration with “Nova Poshta.” An automatic was installed at Kyiv branch №111.

3. TURBO PIZZA

The second project by the same team, but in the gastronomy sector. Unlike traditional pizzerias, their machines prepare and serve hot pizza in just 2–3 minutes. The business started in late 2023 and now has approximately 25 pizza machines across various regions of Ukraine.

Thanks to affordable prices, bright design, and a new format, each location generates about 40,000 UAH in net profit per month.

4. OMG! ASIA!

The first automated ramen bar in Ukraine. Launched in December 2021, the franchise has over 60 machines in Kyiv, Lviv, and other cities.

The key feature is monitoring broth temperature and noodle stock via a proprietary platform.

During peak days, each machine can prepare up to 50 servings, generating around 30,000 UAH in monthly profit.

Unsuccessful Startups

1. Auchan Autonomous Store

In 2021, the first pick-up point store appeared in the “Comfort Town” residential complex.

Customers accessed the store via a dedicated app. Inside, there was a self-service checkout and facial recognition cameras.

Half of the main profit depended on nighttime purchases. Therefore, the introduction of a curfew in 2022 forced the company to close the project.

2. “Kyivkhlib” Autonomous Stores

In February 2024, “Kyivkhlib” opened six autonomous outlets in Kyiv due to a staffing crisis caused by full-scale invasion.

The technology principle was similar to the previous example. However, due to power outages and multiple theft attempts, only one store is currently operational.

3. “Mama Prepared”

In November 2023, the “Mama, Well, Buy!” team presented their frozen product vending machines under the brand “Mama Prepared” at a vending exhibition.

However, the franchise’s social media remains inactive since 2020, the website is absent, and there are no other materials about further project development.

Conclusion

Factors for the success of autonomous retail startups:

  1. Location and traffic. Micro-markets should be in high-traffic areas.
  2. Technical reliability. Stable 24/7 operation and online inventory monitoring.
  3. User focus. Speed, convenience, attractive offers (toys, ramen, pizza).
  4. Marketing. Collaboration with well-known brands, activity on social media.
